One of the most important things to know about the plumbing in your home is the location of your water shut off valve. That’s because this valve controls the water flow to the entire house. If you find your home being flooded, you need to know where the water shut off is so you can prevent serious water damage. Or, maybe you notice your water bills have increased and you think you may have a leak, shutting off the water and calling a plumber to locate and take care of it will be less money and water wasted for you. No matter the season, you can mitigate water damage by knowing where your shut off is and how to turn it off/on.

Places to Look for Your Water Shut Off

Below is a list of some of the common places to look for your home’s water shut off. It is often located near the front of the house on an interior wall, where the water comes in from the water meter. However, if it’s not found in any of the places listed, it might be in the water meter box itself near the street. Accessing the meter box may require extra tools, and caution not touch anything on the city side.

  • Basement
  • Utility Room
  • Crawl Space
  • Garage

What a Water Shut Off Looks Like

There are two main kinds of valves that are used for the water shut off: ball valves and gate valves. A ball valve looks like a lever; you need to turn it perpendicular to turn off the water. The photo shows the ball valve position for the water turned on. Gate valves are circular and you turn them clockwise to discontinue the water.
